Masters students learn about the RTS
Experts from the River Thames Scheme (RTS) visited Glasgow Caledonian University's (GCU) London campus recently to talk about the project with students and lecturers.
David Bedlington, Deputy Sponsor for the Environment Agency and RTS Environmental Lead Richard Woodward discussed how the RTS will reduce the risk of flooding to thousands of homes, businesses and vital infrastructure; how it will create new areas of green open space with recreational facilities and connections to wildlife and how it will provide additional sustainable travel connections to benefit communities.
They also shared insights into survey work, the consultation process and how the channel sections will operate.
The students, who are studying for the university's Master of Science (MSc) in Environmental Management, came from a variety of backgrounds, such as engineering, business and biological sciences.
David and Richard's presentation was followed by an interesting question and answer session where the students raised a wide range of topics relevant to their studies.
Richard Woodward said: "It was a pleasure to share some insights about the RTS with the GCU students and to hear their thoughts and ideas. Many of those in the audience were from overseas and it was really interesting for us to get their perspective on the scheme.
"We hope this will be the start of a long-term relationship with GCU and we are looking forward to arranging more cooperation activities over the coming months."
