Flood Action Week: Preparing for floods
Climate change is increasing the risk of flooding – plan to be better prepared for a flood.
This year's Flood Action Week takes place from 20 – 26 November 2023, with the aim of helping people understand what they can do to prepare for floods.
Around 5.5 million homes and businesses across England are at an increased risk of flooding due to climate change. The weather in 2023 has been one of the most extreme on record, highlighting the impact climate change is already having on the UK.
The average cost of a flood to a home is around £30k. Floods can pose a significant risk to life and have serious impact on people's mental health.
The most important thing to do is prepare for flooding and know what to do if it does happen. Doing so can reduce the damage to your home and possessions by around 40%, reduce the risk to your life and reduce your risk of suffering from long-term mental health issues.
In order to help residents prepare for flooding, the River Thames Scheme (RTS) has created an information hub of useful resources on our flood prevention, planning and recovery webpage.
The scheme social media channels will be disseminating a series of posts in order to increase public awareness of flood and associated risks, as well as provide useful information on proactive measures.
