The River Thames Scheme is a multi-agency partnership, with development led by the Environment Agency and Surrey County Council.
We're building an integrated delivery team with the skills and expertise we need to deliver this once in a generation scheme.
Whatever your experience or expertise, the River Thames Scheme is an outstanding place to start or develop your career.
International Women in Engineering Day 2022
International Women in Engineering Day (INWED) is a day to honour female engineers and their remarkable expertise and skills. The global campaign is intended to raise awareness and increase the profiles of women in engineering. It also encourages those still in the early stages of their careers to pursue engineering opportunities. To promote this special day, INWED encourages organisations to support and participate. The theme for 2022 is about looking toward the future with an emphasis on inventors and innovators who are working to change engineering sectors for the better.
Roles and empowerment of women
To raise awareness of the many career opportunities available to women in engineering, at the River Thames Scheme we believe that the promotion of female role models is essential to remove outdated stereotypes of engineering being a 'man's job'. Female engineers comprise just 16.5% of the engineering workforce, making it one of many STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) based industries that remain male-dominated.
We still have significant work to make an impact at a global level and it is important to encourage women to pursue engineering careers and challenge the status quo. This not only raises awareness but will increase diversity and inclusion and the range and number of career opportunities predicted for engineering fields for females. Women need to be seen in more pivotal and influential roles to increase their visibility and convince others who may question whether engineering is a suitable career path for women.
As we celebrate INWED on the River Thames Scheme (RTS) please read about one of our incredible female engineers who is helping shape the RTS. She shares her perspectives on the career path and benefits of her chosen career in Civil Engineering via her International Women in Engineering Day blog.
